Berimbau E Percussao - Music And Rhythms Of Brazil

The following imformation was found in souljazzrecords.co.uk:

Papete is one of Brasil's great percussion players. He is also one of Brasil's least known! These recordings are taken from a number of very rare recordings he made in the late 70's in Brasil. Focusing on many of Brasil's folk songs and styles from the northern part of Brasil, this CD also features Batucada's and Brasilian jazz. Sleeve notes were specially commissioned by one of Brasil's greatest arrangers, Theo de Barros and nice pictures too make this a classy package! Papete (Jose de Ribamar) was born in 1947, in the city of Bacabal, in the state of Maranhau. He is the youngest of a set of four great Brasilian percussionists: Airto Moreira, Nana Vasconceles and Anunciacao are his antecedants. Together they form the foundations of a school which influenced musicians throughout the world. The music of Papete was originially released on the independent Discos Marcus Pereira label. In the 1970's this label released a series of records that focussed on the folkloric traditions of Brasil. This series had a profound influence on many Brasilians, both musicians and non- musicians. The work of Papete should be listened to in this context. The Best Of Papete features songs by the great songwriters such as Edu Lobo, Gilberto Gil and Dorival Caymmi alongside Batucadas, Capoeira, Forro and other folk music from Brasil.

Ciudad De Las Ideas

After years of performing and releasing albums overseas, acclaimed modern flamenco guitarist Vicente Amigo achieves stateside recognition with his release Ciudad de las Ideas. While he is accomplished on the fretboard, Amigo takes a decidedly low-key approach on tracks like "Tres Notas Para Decir te Quiero" (with its soothing falsetto singing) and the solo guitar piece "Bolero de Vicente." Through his style, Amigo is able to flesh out his songs with controlled doses of requisite guitar pyrotechnics. (The syrupy strings and mellow guitar of the title track, however, evoke easy listening.) Not everything here is laid back. Two of the songs--the dramatic "Cordoba" (solea) and the initially languid "La Tarde as Caramelo" (alegrias)--build to dramatic crescendos, while "Tata," the album's most energetic cut, features lively brass and bass and a catchy one-word chorus. There's a smoldering romanticism displayed on Ciudad de las Ideas, and the talented Amigo proves he is in command of mood and tone throughout.
