Roots Revisited

Maceo Parker has spent most of his career in R&B/funk bands, most notably those led by James Brown, George Clinton and Bootsy Collins. This CD gave him a chance to stretch out as a leader and his soulful horn immediately brings to mind Hank Crawford and (to a lesser extent) Lou Donaldson. With a strong backup group that includes Pee Wee Ellis on tenor, trombonist Fred Wesley and Don Pullen on organ, Parker enthusiastically plays over infectious grooves with just one funky departure ("In Time"). Roots Revisited is a throwback to the 1960s soul jazz style and Maceo Parker gives one the impression that, if called upon, he could hold his own on a bebop date. ~ Scott Yano

MoodSwing

Artist:
Joshua Redman
Album: MoodSwing
Year: 1994
Description: On his first album with his own band and the first one to entirely feature his own material, saxist Redman finds ingenious ways of creating a mode of acoustic jazz that is both entertaining and enlightening. Accessible soul and blues riffs coexist with brainier moments, even including a touch of the avant-garde (a nod to his saxophonist father, Dewey). MoodSwing plays like an artistic journey. Now Is The Hour

Artist:
Charlie Haden
Album: Now Is The Hour
Year: July 18-20, 1995

Seldom does modern music so perfectly evoke a time and place in history as this terrific band. Fans of Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra will find the simple accessibility either surprising or disappointing, but fans of classic, romantic jazz will find joy. ~ Tim Sheridan, All Music Guide

The Main Ingredient

Artist:
 Shirley Horn
Album: The Main Ingredient
Year: February 2, 1996
Description: This Shirley Horn CD is a little unusual, as it was recorded at her home. The four sessions utilized some of her favorite musicians, including bassists Steve Novosel and Charles Ables; drummers Steve Williams, Elvin Jones, and Billy Hart; trumpeter Roy Hargrove (on "The Meaning of the Blues") and Joe Henderson; and Buck Hill on tenors. As usual, virtually all of the songs are taken at slow tempos, with "All or Nothing at All" given a definitive treatment. Other highlights include "The Look of Love," "Fever," and Henderson's playing on "You Go to My Head."~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Track List:
  1. Nuit Sur Les Champs - Elysees (Take 1)
  2. Blues For Sarge

How Long Has This Been Going On?

The great Sarah Vaughan in a typically spontaneous Norman Granz Pablo production with pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Louie Bellson. Sassy sounds wonderful stretching out on such songs as "Midnight Sun," "More Than You Know," "Teach Me Tonight," and "Body and Soul," among others. All ten of the melodies are veteran standards that she knew backwards but still greeted with enthusiasm. A very good example of late-period Sarah Vaughan. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
